A little bit of history
Coffee has always been a key product in the economic and social history of Costa Rica. It allowed the country to insert itself into the global economy and develop an economy based on small and medium size farms which created a social fabric sustained by the principle of solidarity, based on the campesinos (small farmers), which is so characteristic of this beautiful county. The oldest democracy in Latin America was based on the production and development of the technology necessary to produce high quality coffees which that enjoy a worldwide reputation. The expansion of the coffee business started with its exports to Europe and the first "boom" took place at the end of the 1800s, at a time when the capital extended itself towards the Paseo Colon, the main avenue of San José. In the name of "modernization", many architectonic jewels that were found in this avenue were destroyed, remaining as a silent memory of a charming past that today can only be appreciated in faded photographs.
A different option
In 1993 we had the idea of buying the home of the Montealegre’s family, one of the main coffee exporters to Europe, and thus save this beautiful building. The mansion was designed by the famous Spanish architect Luis Llac, of the renowned Barcelona school of architecture. Construction started in 1910 in a charming mixture of Caribbean Victorian with Art Nouveau styles. Thus, when we decided to remodel it, we paid careful attention to preserving its character and architectural features, turning it into a unique hotel with personality and history. “La Rosa del Paseo” today is one of the few remaining examples of the architectural past of the city and thus represents something like a time capsule. It is a silent witness of an era characterized by luxury and the same time by the simplicity that the big coffee families, despite their wealth, never lost.
An ambience full of historic reminiscences allows the visitor to experience the atmosphere that prevailed in the mansions of rich coffee exporting families. English style furniture stand side by side with rustic ones of local craftsmanship. Rooms decorated according to the style of the period, paintings, antiques, typical furniture and floors made out of fine woods or with Italian style glazed tiles, allow you to recreate a charming long gone by era. In this unique ambiance the guest can also enjoy all the amenities that the modern hospitality industry has to offer, such as wireless Internet, Fax, Cable TV with channels in Spanish, English, French, Italian, Chinese and German, private bathrooms with antique style bathtubs and other fixtures, spacious rooms, beds with orthopaedic mattresses, wheel chair access facilities, ecological management systems - in short, a winning combination of style and comfort plus a personalized top quality service
Our environmental management system has obtained a Three Leafs rating under the government issued Certification of Touristic Sustainability (CST), distinguishing Hotel Rosa del Paseo as the first small in hotel in San José to receive such a high rating. We also have a Three Star rating under international hospitality industry standards, making us the preferred option in a market segment where clients are not only looking for a charming and historic atmosphere combined with comfort, but also for a high quality service at a reasonable price.
