Coffee has always been a decisive product in the economic and social history of Costa Rica . It allowed the country to insert itself into the global economy and develop an economy based on small and medium enterprises which created a social fabric sustained by the principle of solidarity, as well as a broad base of campesinos (small farmers) that are so characteristic of this beautiful county. The oldest democracy in Latin America is based on the production and the development of the technology necessary to produce coffee of the highest quality, today highly recognized throughout the world. The expansion of the coffee business goes hand in hand with the export of the “golden grain” to Europe; with it comes a surge in prosperity, in a time when the capital extended itself to Paseo Colon, back then the principal avenue of San José . As the capital experienced the inevitable “modernization”, many architectonic jewels that could be found in this avenue were replaced by concrete buildings, leaving behind the memories of a charming past that today can only be appreciated in faded photographs.

So we had the idea of buying the family residence of the Montealegre family in Paseo Colon, one of the main exporters of coffee to Europe , and to save this beautiful mansion built in 1897 in a Caribbean Victorian style. We decided to remodel it and turn the building into a unique hotel with personality and history. “La Rosa del Paseo” today is one of the few remaining examples of the architecture of the city's past and thus represents something like a time capsule. It is a silent witness of an era characterized by luxury and the same time of a simplicity that the big coffee families, despite their wealth, never cared to lose.

An ambience full of historic reminiscences allows the visitor to experience the atmosphere that prevailed in the mansions of rich coffee exporting families. English furniture side by side with rustic elements. 18 rooms decorated according to the style of the period, paintings, antiques, typical furniture and fine wooden floors all reproduce impressions of a precious time long gone by. In this unique ambiance, the guest can also enjoy all the amenities that the modern hospitality industry has to offer, such as Cable TV with channels in Spanish, English, French and German, private bathrooms with bathtub, spacious rooms or beds with orthopedic mattresses - in short, a delicate combination of style and comfort. Guests may request a number of additional services, such as lunch, dinner, cocktails or parties.

Our system of environmentally sustainable management (CST), rated with three levels, distinguishes Hotel Rosa del Paseo as the first small in hotel in San José to receive such an award. Additionally, our quality distinction La Guaria, as well as our official three star rating ( international Standard)make us the preferred option in a segment where clients are not only looking for an historic atmosphere combined with comfort, but also a service of the highest quality at a reasonable price of a costa rica small hotel in San Jose downtown Costa Rica Boutique Hotel.
